Emotional Intelligence

What is Emotional Intelligence?

It is a set of skills that involves two parts. The first involves of being aware of how emotions in ourselves and others drives behaviours. The second involves developing skills to manage these emotions intelligently to leverage our personal strengths to create solutions to these problems and effectively influence the performance of others.

The Advantages of Emotional Intelligence

Research shows conclusively that Emotional Intelligence is critical for both personal and professional success. Learning more about Emotional Intelligence and applying them to your daily life will enable you to better motivate yourself and others.

People who are intellectually the brightest are not the most successful either in business or their personal lives. We all have examples of people who are intellectually the brightest are not the most successful either in business or their personal lives.

We all have examples of people who we know who were good in school or university but failed in business, it has been shown that IQ may be related to as little as 4 percent of real world success (Sternberg 1996). This means that over 90 percent may be related to other forms of intelligence.

Much research has been done in the business sector that Emotional Intelligence defines the difference between successful leaders and high performing companies (Reuven Bar-On 2000).

Emotional Intelligence can be learned

Research by Mayer, Salovey, Caruso (2000) and Dr Reuven Bar-On (1998) conclusively shows that Emotional Intelligence can be learned and improved by psychodynamic methods. Such methods may include coaching and cognitive behavioural therapy, this can be done with individuals and teams.

Models of Emotional Intelligence

Two main models of Emotional Intelligence have been validated and tested robustly. One developed by Mayer, Salovey, Caruso (MSCEIT) in the late 1980’s and one by Dr Reuven Bar-On in 1980 called the EQ-1 and EQ-360. Both models can be used by Innovation Psychology in seminars and coaching, depending upon requirements.
